We are seeking to recruit a Harbour Master to join our Westport Harbour team.

This is a fantastic full time, permanent role (40 hours per week) which offers an excellent opportunity to work within a talented, innovative team. What you’ll be doing
The successful candidate will hold responsibility for a variety of important duties including, but not limited to:
- As the Harbourmaster you are responsible for maritime safety for all water users. You lead by example always advocating for maritime safety on behalf of the Council.
- Ensure safe vessel movements within Westport river, harbour and the area outside the river mouth which is the jurisdiction of harbour master. Of specific interest will be assisting with the safe crossing of the Westport river bar. Being able to demonstrate your experience with river bar crossing is an essential requirement of the role.
- Conduct patrols to educate and enforce maritime safety provisions.
- Administer the Navigation Safety Bylaw and contribute to the review and improvement of the Bylaw.
- Oversee pilot training, proficiency, and exemption certification.
- Assess annual commercial licence applications.
- Provide advice for resource consent applications in the coastal marine area.
- Maintain aids to navigation in accordance with the harbour maintenance program.
- Develop and implement maritime emergency procedures.
- Ensure the ports wharfs and other harbour structures are safe and fit for purpose, regularly maintained and compliant with legislative requirements.
